This week's story is about a PK (Pastor's Kid). Occasionally they get a bad rap. Maybe it's because everyone thinks they should be little angels. Maybe it's because they get tired of such expectations and revolt! This one is an example for all of us.
Nathan was about to celebrate his ninth birthday. His father suggested that, in addition to partying at the local high school swimming pool and then having friends over for burgers and cake, Nathan might want to do something different with his "gifts." Pastor Dad offered a few simple suggestions.
Suddenly, Nathan announced that it would be "cool" if, instead of bringing gifts for him, his friends brought money so that they could support a mission project. The project Nathan chose was to help support an orphan child in Kenya. He hoped they would have enough money ($80) to support one child for a year.
Nathan's father wrote to Rev. Matthew Harrison, Director of LCMS World Relief and Human care: "To say the least, I am very proud of my son. I wasn't really sure that this would be an idea that would fly. He needed nothing more than the suggestion."
Nathan also wrote to Harrison:
Dear Pastor Harrison,
I asked the boys in my class that when they came to the party to bring money to help orphans in Kenya. With all the money we came out with $86.00!! I like helping people, especially children like me. I asked them to bring money instead of gifts but Cole brought both anyway. I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
I wonder what the children in Kenya do for their birthdays? On my cake my Mom forgot the "D" in birthday. Cole was the first to notice! It looked like this:
